COURSE OUTLINE

Divided into 2 parts this in-depth but easily accessible course will equip you with yoga elements and adaptations beyond standard current teachings of pregnancy yoga and postnatal yoga. Coursework is ideally completed between Part 1 & 2 enabling you to deepen and refine your understanding and skills on Part 2 and is carefully read with detailed feedback given to further develop your teaching practice.

You will learn the classic components of prenatal yoga:

  • The benefits of specific prenatal yoga
  • Yoga philosophy for maternity
  • Fundamentals of pregnancy specific anatomy
  • Fundamentals of pregnancy and birth physiology
  • Asana modifications, variations and adjustments including how to adapt or leave out classic poses and why
  • Uniquely ‘Birthlight practices’ that improve the health and balance of the pelvic area, address the emotions of pregnancy in accessible ways and encourage prenatal connection with the baby and the other participants in the class
  • Relaxation and breathing exercises for pregnancy, birth and beyond
  • Practices for early postpartum recovery
  • Use of props, safety guidelines, do’s and don’ts
  • Preparation of class materials and how to set up and manage your class

You will also learn:

  • Specific variations of Asana for each of the ‘four trimesters’ (starting with the neglected first trimester and continuing through to the first 12 weeks post birth)
  • Integrated use of the breath in all practices with reference to neuroendocrinology and maternal mental health
  • Birthlight’s unique ‘micromovements of yoga’ for pelvic stability and pelvic floor elasticity
  • Applications of yoga to a body-mind childbirth preparation- whatever kind of birth may be planned (from the studio to the birth space)
  • Understanding common pregnancy complaints and how to help women to avoid and alleviate them
  • How to empower women of all levels of fitness and body types, with sequencing for experienced practitioners
  • Yoga walks and fluid movements ignored in Western style yoga
  • Teaching in circles and using a wide range of pair and group practices that create friendship and ease in pre/postnatal classes
  • Applications of yoga “off the mat” at work and at home through pregnancy
  • The Ayurvedic perspective on Pregnancy and birth, including a special self massage for pregnancy

Who Yoga teachers (200hr) wishing to train to offer specialised classes for Pregnancy, labour and birth, and early Postnatal recovery. Health professionals with a personal Yoga experience may also apply.
Course description This course covers everything you need to know in order to offer effective, inclusive and supportive Yoga for Pregnancy classes plus early post partum recovery practices. Based on over 30 years of collective experience of working with pregnant women from all walks of life and from different cultures, this training has inspired many other training courses.

This course takes place in 2 parts with time to study and practice in between. Coursework is ideally completed between Part 1 and Part 2, including teaching your case studies. All coursework is carefully read and commented on, helping you to further refine your teaching.

This 6 day diploma course (45 contact hours) can be combined with the 2 or 3 day Postnatal training for those who wish to register as a Yoga Alliance Professionals Prenatal Yoga teacher.
