Keynote by Professor Charlotte Faircloth (Professor of Family and Society at the UCL Social Research Institute and Project Leader of the BAM50 project, London, Trustee of Birthlight): spoke on her project ‘50 Years of Becoming a Mother…whilst becoming a mother’? working with Ann Oakley and some more personal reflections’. This project examines women’s transition to motherhood over the last 50 years in the UK. In the last decades of the 20th Century, Professor Ann Oakley’s ground-breaking ‘Becoming a Mother’ project:
- Reshaped thinking about motherhood
- Established a multi-disciplinary area of academic
research - Provoked a sea-change in practice and policy around
maternity care
In a time of accelerating social change this project takes forward that legacy.
