Baby Yoga Diploma Course Overview

Teaching the multifaceted positive parent-baby interaction that Birthlight Baby Yoga offers is possibly the best contribution to the start of a healthy lifestyle for babies and new families. Our training rests on a wealth of experience over three decades, equipping practitioners with the knowledge and skills to impart a simple, safe and tested practice in communities as well as in nurseries, care units and hospitals.

Baby Yoga training aims to provide new parents with physical activity not provided to babies in our 21st century babies global urban lifestyle. Babies need movement appropriate to their ages and developmental stages to digest and sleep well and to learn about the world.

Course History

Birthlight has pioneered Baby Yoga worldwide as an inclusive complement to Baby Massage, developing an ancient tradition of early nurture still alive in India and in other parts of the world today. Françoise Freedman, who wrote the original ‘Baby Yoga’ book in 2000*,

was inspired by the active combination of movement, touch and cuddles that Amazonian indigenous babies receive to ‘grow well’. Cutting-edge findings in the science of infant development and the science of parenting, continually inform and support Birthlight BabyYoga.

Course Format

Baby Yoga Part 1 is a three day intensive course that covers the period from 3 months to pre-mobile babies (9-12 months variable). It is a blend of theory, practice and teaching methods with the aim of imparting practical proficiency and confidence to students over a relatively short time.

Baby Yoga Part 2  two days training continues with theory, practice and teaching methods for older mobile babies before they reach toddlerhood. This course includes birthlight yoga based movements that facilitate transitions to sitting, crawling, standing and walking. Additional resources are offered for teaching mobile babies from approximately 9 to 18 months. The course also includes further knowledge on babies’ brain development and particularly on the importance of correct stimulation of the vestibular system. A deeper understanding of affect regulation is presented to highlight the potential contribution that baby yoga can make to enhance or repair affective communication between parents and babies through playful interaction. Additional techniques for teaching joint relaxation for parent and baby together are taught to help release parental tension.

Qualification

On successful completion of part 1 & 2 practical assessments, case studies and online reading and tasks, teachers obtain the qualification “Birthlight Baby Yoga Diploma” qualification.

Course attendance requirement

It is essential to attend the whole of the course. Anyone missing more than 2 hours will have to repeat the course and arrange a catch-up meeting with the tutor. An extra fee will be charged to the student.

“I really enjoyed this course and it has really helped me to develop my confidence within my role as it’s all so new to me coming from education. Your style of teaching I really enjoyed and your in-depth knowledge made me inspired to work through the rest of the birthlight courses. As someone with anxiety issues, I know the benefits of yoga and breathing techniques, so, to be able to apply that to stressed out mums and babies is amazing. Thank you!”
