Birthlight tutor - Julia Gibson
Julia grew up in England and when she was eight years old woke to discover her cat birthing kittens on her bed; at some level this was a seed for her future work.
Julia has taught yoga for twenty five years working in community organisations, schools, the Aboriginal Health Service and government agencies. In 1995 she began teaching prenatal yoga, a passion that grew with her own experience of practising yoga through two very different pregnancies and births.
In 2001, when her daughter was a year old, Julia’s heart lead her back to supporting women and couples during the journey of pregnancy using the inspiring practises of yoga as key to health, joy and vitality. She also found a new love in offering classes to mums and their babies. This was the birth of Belly Bliss Yoga.
In 2002 Julia met Francoise Freedman and felt a deep connection with the Birthlight approach. She completed the Birthlight Teacher’s Diploma and in 2013 had the opportunity to support midwife Wendy Gadsden in tutoring the Birthlight Yoga for Maternity Professionals in Sydney.
Before coming to Australia, Julia completed a degree in Theatre Studies and English, then trained and worked as an actor. In 1988 serendipity brought her to Tasmania where a passion for yoga was ignited and a love of dance and drama led to the completion of a Diploma of Education. Further travels in SE Asia and India deepened her practise of yoga and inspired her study of Buddhist philosophy and meditation, ultimately leading her to train as a yoga teacher. She is now a Senior Teacher with Yoga Australia.
In addition to her work with Belly Bliss Yoga, Julia teaches yoga in the Health Faculty of a large school in Hobart and co-facilitates residential retreats for women entitled “Stillness to Creativity”. She is delighted to be collaborating with Helen Macnair to tutor Birthlight courses in Australia.
