Aqua yoga therapy short course / cpd (2 days)

This short course explores applications of Aqua Yoga to back pain, arthritis, MS, ME and post operative recovery. The course imparts a range of strengthening movements on the pool floor and fluid stretches in deeper water using swimming aids are taught with breathing, including cautions and variations.

Students gain competence in helping clients to release tension in water and relieve chronic or recurrent sources of pain with easy relaxing moves in water. The course is particularly applicable to pregnant women suffering from Pelvic Girdle Pain and lower back pain as well as to women around the menopause.

Who is the course for?

This course is open to:

  • Aquanatal Yoga teachers
  • Aqua Therapists and Yoga Teachers with a qualification in Yoga Therapy and with an affinity to water

Applicants should be able to swim 25 metres comfortably without the use of swimming aids, be confident in submerging themselves and comfortable in deep water. Students must participate in the pool for all water sessions. A CPR qualification is also highly recommended. Life Saving skills are required for those planning to work in pools without a lifeguard on poolside.

Course outline

This short course is experiential and includes the teaching of directly applicable practices for a wide range of conditions irrespective of age or fitness. Visual materials are used to present the conditions and practices covered on the course. Participants will be prepared to teach therapeutic applications of Aqua Yoga to small groups or in one to one sessions. From a holistic view we cover pain relieving movements in water, toning of muscles and ligaments supporting the painful sites, use of the breath and specific micro-movements for releasing tension from recent or old injuries. Relaxation in water is combined with an expansion of breathing to promote anxiety reduction and healing progress of labour and delivery.

The course includes practical resources on how to use the qualities of water to help clients take an active part in their wellbeing after an injury or surgical operations or during chronic illness and to support them with confidence and understanding.

Visual aids, worksheets and role-play are used to facilitate learning. Students receive a training manual and handouts.

By the end of the Aqua Yoga study day attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the conditions for tension release in water
  • Understand the power of aquabreathing combined with water resistance for muscle toning without effort or strain
  • Increase the use of abdominal and lower back muscles for gaining overall strength and fitness
  • Demonstrate the use of swimming and floating aids
  • Discuss the advantages of exercises by the wall, free standing and in deep water

How is this course assessed?

This course is tutor assessed by means of a practical in which students teach a specific subject or practice learnt during the course to the group.

What qualification is gained on this course?

On successful completion, participants obtain a Certificate of Training in Aqua Yoga Therapy that qualifies them to integrate the practices taught on the course in their professional activities as therapists and teachers.

This short course may count as CPD in their profession.

Certified Birthlight Aquanatal Yoga Teachers Level 2 gain the status of Birthlight Practioner in Aqua Yoga after completing the Aqua Yoga Therapy short course.
