Françoise Barbira Freedman, Doriel Hall
Synopsis
This is a clear, compelling and beautifully illustrated guide to yoga postures developed especially for new mothers. Mixing with emotions of wonder and joy at the birth of a baby can be feelings of apprehension towards new responsibilities and physical demands. Yoga can give you the support you need at this time of change, helping you to nurture yourself and the baby and gradually regain physical strength and tone. It also helps you to relax deeply when your baby is feeding or sleeping so that you can conserve your own energy, drained almost inevitably by a lack of sleep. Yoga is a gentle way to become closer to your baby, to relax together with her or him and build the strong bonds that will draw you together throughout life. Postnatal yoga is a step-by-step guide to the ideal yoga poses adapted for this special time in your life. Gently moving through the first six months after giving birth, the exercises build up gradually, with special routines for recovering from caesarean or episiotomies, giving birth to twins, strengthening your pelvic floor and having your first period. Through years of application and practice, Françoise Barbira Freedman has taken traditional yoga postures and adapted them to suit different stages of recovery after giving birth. Together with Doriel Hall she has translated these into a series of exercises that can be done at home, at any time of day, even with only a few minutes to spare.

God, what a lifesaver. I was really sore and stiff, in shock and had backache after a rough birth. But then a friend bought me this book. Some days I could only grab a few minutes but the routines were great even then. I feel a lot more peaceful and supple and energetic. In fact i'm plotting to go to yoga classes from now on.
