" I found the "Birthing Lightly" approach to gentle 2nd stage birthing truly inspirational. I have known for so long that a baby birthed gently is so much more ready to embrace life, but until this study day I lacked a direction which enabled women to effectively manage their pushing stage without the drama and forcefulness that traditional western birthing has adopted. I have been greatly encouraged by the display of yoga breathing and have used this technique effectively at a recent birth. I am enthusiastic about the prospect of more 'birthing lightly'
Overview
The course is one of our new series of Birthlight short courses that can be used for CPD purposes by Birthlight members and are accessible to other health and yoga professionals with relevant qualifications.
This is a very special day dedicated to understanding that women and babies are designed to inter-relate. Giving birth is a mind / body process, therefore looking at the environment, and understanding the female anatomy to birth naturally, is important.
This is achievable through breathing, yoga with movement, and the use of the Abdominal and Pelvic muscles.
Who is this course for?
This course is open to all qualified or training perinatal and yogacise teachers, to midwives and childbirth preparation teachers interested in the Birthlight approach.
Course structure
The seminar is a chance for Midwives/ Childbirth Educators to share their knowledge, and deepen their skill base. The day is experiential, with breathing techniques, yoga and massage.
The morning consists of relaxed stretching, discovering the power of the Abdominal, Back and Pelvic muscles, and the skill of breathing using the diaphragm. The afternoon looks at the use of sacral massage in labour; to change an OP to an OA in labour. You will be asked to pair off, and massage your partner to understand this manoeuver more easily. The afternoon continues with the advantages of leaning forward, followed by relaxation using abdominal breathing. The day concludes with “Time for a bit of Belly Dancing “, and the use of birthing props in the Labour circuit.

Testimonials
- Wendy teaches her craft in a very relaxed, enthusiastic manner. She provides a wealth of knowledge, backed up by research and communicates this effectively. The atmosphere in the room was easygoing and promoted interaction. Her material was aimed at an appropriate level due to all the participants having prior knowledge of anatomy, physiology and the birthing process. Her written material was well presented and easy to follow.
- This lively study day should be recommended to all Midwives as the skills learnt are appropriate to each area of practice.
