Perinatal yoga training in Cyprus

In September I had the opportunity to travel to Nicosia, Cyprus to teach not only the first Birthlight Perinatal Teacher Training on the island, but my very first training as a Birthlight Tutor. As you can imagine, I was radiating nervous energy. I was greeted by the studio owner at the airport and as soon as I saw her my nerves were immediately soothed. Her warm smile and welcoming manner was a preview of the general openness I experienced not only in the capital city of Nicosia, but also within our group of 11 trainees. And what she hadn't revealed to me prior to our meeting was instantly evident: she herself was pregnant!

As the trainees arrived and we made our initial introductions, I was pleased to welcome such a diverse group of Yogis to the training. Not only were there Greek-Cypriot locals attending, but also long and shorter-term residents of Cyprus from various cultural backgrounds, including Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, and Swedish nationals. The trainees' broad, international experiences made for rich and interesting discussions. We had one male trainee, a father to a teenage boy, positively contributing to the dynamics of the group. A couple of the women had children themselves, and were open to sharing their experiences in pregnancy, birth and parenting. The studio owner, in her 25th week of pregnancy, also joined in on the training. What they all shared in common was their yoga training with Yoga Works, an international training program based out of the USA. In addition, a few of them are athletes who have or still do participate in competitions and
train on a regular basis.

Knowing that I had a group with such a firm base in physical body work made me a bit apprehensive at first, thinking they may not be receptive to the more fine, subtle approach we take in working with our pregnant women. But the group was so intuitive and open that my apprehensions quickly dissolved. Not only were they accepting of the practices, but they thoroughly enjoyed breaking out of the rigid alignment structure within which they usually practice and teach. Combined with comprehending the theory and anatomy to back up why we do what we do, they experienced a different facet of Yoga. There was a palpable broadening of perspective that occurred as the trainees realized their role as caretakers of women in this very special time of their lives.

As for my host Kristi, it was a revelation to experience a nurturing type of movement during her pregnancy that resonated deeply with her. Formerly she was very active in Pilates and Yoga, and worked long days teaching in her studio. She was starting to notice the negative effects of stress and fatigue and often felt her belly harden as a result. She had stopped doing yoga and exercising, out of lack of time and energy. Already after the first day of experiencing our Birthlight flows, Kristi felt her energy shift and her mood lighten. Her back ached less. And that evening, she was in joyful spirits as we enjoyed a relaxed meal together at her home. It was obvious that she and her baby were benefiting from the increased flow of oxytocin generated by a day of Birthlight practices and by feeling acknowledged, supported and nurtured from the group.

Thinking back now, I am still basking in the glow of those 3 days of teaching in Nicosia. It is such a privilege to share this empowering work pioneered by Françoise, and such a rewarding experience to move and inspire people with it. Particularly during times of uncertainty and confusion, spreading the Birthlight Spirals of Joy, touching hearts and improving the quality of life for so many takes on a whole new urgency. This momentum is still enriching my daily classes back home in Zurich.
