Water Birth: Stories to inspire and inform
I came to water birth with a high level of scepticism - I could not understand why I needed a large inflatable pool of water in my living room when women had been giving birth on dry land for - well - since the dawn of time, presumably! However, I was encouraged to have a rethink, when, after a traumatic first birth in hospital, I planned my second birth at home. My scepticism melted away as I lowered my cumbersome labouring body into the delicious water of my birth pool! I had the most fantastic experience, and when I came to have my third baby a year ago, couldn't imagine giving birth any other way!
In the meantime I was asked to edit Water Birth: Stories to Inspire and Inform by publisher Lonely Scribe, and leapt at the chance. I don't think there is a better way to learn about birth than through the stories and experiences of other women. I also think that a lot of people who choose water birth are aiming for a particular kind of birth - one in which they feel powerful and in control, and in which they do the 'delivering'. I just knew that a collection of water birth stories would be a great read for anyone who wanted to hear about birth as a normal, natural and empowering experience. I'm so thrilled with the final result: there are all kinds of births and all kinds of perspectives represented, but they all have the same common denominator - the amazing power of water!

The Birth of Milli's Second Child, Ursula in May 2010
Ever wondered what it's like to give birth in water? In this inspirational collection of stories, edited and introduced by Positive Birth Movement founder Milli Hill, the reasons more and more women are choosing water birth become clear. The experiences of mums, dads, grandmothers, midwives, doctors, doulas and siblings sit alongside stories from some of the world's leading experts and pioneers in birth in water, including Janet Balaskas, Francoise Freedman, Michel Odent and Dianne Garland.
There are stories of home birth, birth centre and hospital birth; birth in the shower, the tub and the birth pool; stories of twins, breech birth, and VBAC; both keen and skeptical water birthers; a birth pool 'rebirth' after unplanned caesarean, and even stories told in the form of poetry and art.
Water Birth is a must-read book for anyone who wants a water birth, and is guaranteed to change the mind of anyone who doesn't!
